What Working with Ballast Looks Like

You’ve Seen the Problems We Solve,
You’ve Learned How We Approach the Work,
Now Let’s Talk About How We Actually Engage with Clients.

A Proven Framework,
calibrated to your needs

We don’t sell a la carte services. And we don’t do one-size-fits-all.

Every client gets the same rigorous framework - our process, our tools, our way of working. What changes is how we apply it: the depth, the areas of focus, the mix. More forecasting and scenario analysis here, lighter accounting there. More time on strategy and planning for some, while others need a tighter close and control process.

Some clients need us to own the entire function, while others need us to supplement and layer into their existing team. Either works, as long as we run our proven process.

With us, you get a team, not a single point of failure.
You get a managed service, not another thing to manage.

What you’re actually getting…

What we Own

We run your finance and accounting function - not as ‘consultants’ on the side, but as the team doing the work.

01

Accounting & Close

We own your accounting function — ensuring books close accurately and on time with clean, accrual-based financials. This gives you a true picture of margins, revenue recognition, and profitability by product, service, or customer. Sometimes we do the bookkeeping ourselves; sometimes we work alongside your existing bookkeeper. Either way, we own the output.

02

Controller Functions

We own and drive a disciplined, consistent close process. And every month we do a comprehensive and detailed review of the numbers with a critical eye and in the context of your plans and goals — comprehensive monthly review, trend analysis, variance analysis, and digging into what's actually driving results. This includes cadenced reporting so you know what's happening without having to ask.

03

Forecasting & Planning

We take what the numbers are telling us and project forward — building and maintaining your forecast and budget, running scenarios, and pressure-testing decisions before you make them. This includes tracking cash flow, working capital, and preparing materials for investors, boards, and lenders. This is all done in the language of the underlying accounting and it’s done proactively and consistently.

You get a finance and accounting function that works - without having to build it yourself.

  • “Ballast provides tremendous value to our company with CFO level FP&A and Controller quality accounting.   All this at a fraction of what it would cost to staff those roles within our firm.  This has freed up valuable working capital for product development and revenue expansion over the last 3 years.”

Which Problem Brought You Here?

Foundational / Visibility Issues
Pattern 01
Profitability Blind Spots
You know your top-line numbers, but you can't tell what's actually making money. Margins by product or service line? No idea. Which customers are worth the effort? Can't say.
Pattern 02
Forward Blindness
You have historical data — your books close, you know what happened — but you're blind about what's coming. No rolling forecast, no scenario planning, no way to pressure-test a decision.
Pattern 03
Cashflow Issues
P&L looks fine, but cash is always tight and you cannot explain why. Receivables, payables, inventory, tax distributions — the stuff that doesn't show up on an income statement is causing swings.
Execution / Growth Issues
Pattern 04
Plateau
Growth is flattening and you don't know why. Same playbook, same effort, but results aren't compounding anymore. You can't see which lever to pull.
Pattern 05
Focus (or lack thereof)
Too many opportunities and everything feels important. New market? Interesting. New product line? Exciting. But you're spreading resources thin and not making real progress on any of it.
External-Facing Issues
Pattern 06
Storytelling
You know your business cold but scramble when stakeholders ask financial questions. Board meetings, investor calls, bank conversations — they're always frantic and you're always feeling behind.
Pattern 07
Transaction
A transaction is coming (or just showed up) and you're simply not ready. Your day-to-day books and reports won't hold up under due diligence. There's a gap between the story in your head and what the financials actually show.

No pitch. We’ll ask questions, you’ll ask questions, and we’ll figure out if there’s a fit.

The People behind the work

We talked about a team, not a unicorn hire. See who’s behind the work.

Or let’s just talk

Again, no pitch. We’ll ask questions, you’ll ask questions, and we’ll figure out if there’s a fit.
